Corona Virus Update – June 1, 2020

Now that we are on the road to recovery and reopening, I wanted to share some updates.

The Library Director and I were able to get approval for library curbside service once we entered Phase I of the reopen plan and they have been offering the service ever since. There was a lot of pent up demand and the Library staff has been working diligently to keep up with it. If you have any books that you need to return, please do so sooner rather than later so we can restock the material safely.

The County obtained disposable masks for distribution to residents and the Town of Henrietta distributed 140,000 masks to its residents over two four-hour distributions. The remaining masks have been distributed to community organizations, including to the Henrietta Chamber of Commerce for distribution to businesses that are reopening. If you are a Henrietta business and could use some disposable masks to supplement your supply, please contact the Henrietta Chamber of Commerce at 585-334-4225.

The Town has been working with FoodLink of Rochester to help distribute supplemental food to residents in need. We completed one successful distribution in May and have now scheduled additional FoodLink Distributions for June, July, August, and September. The June 11th distribution will again be at the Library/Rec Center complex and will operate from 10:00 AM to Noon. You must pre-register and can do so by calling 2-1-1 or by texting to 898211. Be certain to state you are registering for the June 11th Henrietta Distribution.

Unfortunately, the 4th of July Festival and Fireworks holiday celebrations have been canceled due to the continuing pandemic. However, we have designed a pandemic-safe celebration that will celebrate both the 4th of July and Memorial Day. We are calling it a Reverse Parade. In a normal parade, the spectators are stationary and the performers parade past. In a reverse parade, the performers are stationary and the spectators parade past. It is being scheduled for Saturday, June 27th. Look for more details to follow on this celebration.

The Town DPW crews are back at full strength with regards to permanent staff. However, we still need additional seasonal help in order to keep up with the work required. If you have an interest in working in the Buildings and Grounds or the Highway divisions of the DPW, please visit our web page or send your resume and cover letter to the Henrietta DPW at 475 Calkins Road, PO Box 999, Henrietta, NY 14467.

Recreation is part of Phase IV of the reopening plan so most of our recreation programs and facilities remain closed. Our Town Parks have been open the entire time, except for the cabins, restrooms, playgrounds, and exercise equipment. The Dog Park has reopened, as have all Monroe County dog parks. We are working with the County with regards to reopening our playgrounds, but as of right now, they are still closed for safety reasons. Tennis courts, baseball fields, and basketball courts are open for use, but we ask that you do so in a safe manner, meaning no contact and minimize risk of transmission.

The Town is holding two Blood Drives: Sunday, May 31st and Saturday, June 6th. The Sunday, May 31st Blood Drive will be held at the Henrietta Recreation Center from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM in place of the original Scott’s Donor Drive. To register for this event, you can email Shawn’s Heroes for Life at shawnsheroesforlife@gmail.com, call the Red Cross at 1-800-REDCROSS (800-733-2767), or visit their online portal at: https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive. The Saturday, June 6th Blood Drive will be at the Henrietta Public Library from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in honor of Robert L. Barley, father of Town Councilmember Rob Barley. To register, you can call the Red Cross at 1-800-REDCROSS (800-733-2767), or visit their online portal (see above).

We are using Zoom for participation in our public meetings as well as streaming them out to Facebook and/or YouTube. Please visit https://www.henrietta.org/wishyouwerehere for more details on how to participate.

The Henrietta Senior Center, in cooperation with Monroe County Office for Aging, offers a Grab-n-Go lunch for seniors every Wednesday 11:30-12:30, as well as providing additional food assistance. Please call 585-334-4030 for more information on the program, including how to sign up. If you need supplemental food assistance please call RHAFT at 585-453-2370.  The Senior Center is accepting food donations for RHAFT. Please see the Senior Center Page (https://www.henrietta.org/parksandrecreation/page/senior-center) for more information and details about the Center’s COVID response.

Reminder: The Recreation Center, Library, Senior Center, Tinker Museum, and Hansen Nature Center will remain closed until further notice and all programming activity is suspended, including preschool, youth and adult programs, gym and room reservations, pickleball, walking track and open gym. We are working on a limited schedule of activities and programs as well as a potential summer care program for children for when we reach Phase IV of the reopening plan. We will share more details as they are available.

Reminder: The Town Court remains closed for sessions until further notice. The Town Court building is open on a limited basis from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM for paperwork and required payments. People are encouraged to do their work electronically by contacting the court at court@henrietta.org, by visiting https://www.henrietta.org/towncourt, or by calling 585-359-2640.

As always, this is a rapidly changing and evolving situation. Expect more changes on a regular basis. For anyone looking for information on the re-opening plan, please visit: https://forward.ny.gov/

The best way to prevent acquiring COVID-19 is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends everyday preventative actions to help minimize the spread of respiratory viruses, including practicing “social distancing” and wearing a mask around others whenever possible.

The CDC suggests:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Wear a mask in public.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when sick, especially if medication is needed throughout the day.
  • Cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

People who think they may have been exposed to COVID-19 should contact their health care provider.
